Support for a disability-related change at home
Housing NWT’s Mobility Modifications programme helps eligible homeowners adapt a home for an occupant with a disability. The funding is a forgivable loan, not a general renovation grant. Only modifications connected to the occupant’s disability are considered. The official programme page sets out the current intake and the District Office application route.
Start by explaining the activity the home makes difficult: entering, moving between rooms or using an essential part of the dwelling. Give that information to the housing representative and relevant practitioner. A list of products alone may not explain why the modification is needed or how the completed work will support independent living.

Apply through Housing NWT by October 31, 2026
The published 2026 application period is April 1 through October 31. Contact a District Office and complete the form with Housing NWT or its designated agent; counselling is required through the process. This guide was checked October 30, 2026. It must not remain labelled as an open intake after that date passes without an official extension or new intake notice.
What this means for you: contact the office promptly if you are applying within the stated period. Ask which documents are needed and what constitutes a complete application by the deadline. An enquiry, a contractor quotation and a submitted application are different stages. For a later reader, use the current official status rather than assuming the same dates repeat every year.

Check the household and property tests
The page addresses homeowners with a disability or a household member with a disability, supported by a letter or certificate from a qualified practitioner. It lists age over 19, three years of NWT residence, more than a year in the home, municipal location and basic service requirements. Household income must meet the threshold for the community; arrears questions go to the District Office.
What this means for you: do not borrow another community’s income figure or infer eligibility from age alone. Explain the ownership, occupants and length of residence accurately. Ask which practitioner’s evidence suits the modification and what it needs to describe. Medical evidence supports the disability-related need; it does not replace the other household and property checks.

Understand the amount and forgiveness period
Funding is up to $50,000. The listed forgiveness periods rise with the loan: one year up to $10,000, two years for $10,001–$20,000, three for $20,001–$30,000, four for $30,001–$40,000 and five for $40,001–$50,000. The agreement governs the homeowner’s responsibilities.
What this means for you: “forgivable” is not the same as an unconditional cheque on approval. Read the agreement and ask what must remain true through the relevant period, including what happens if circumstances change. Do not assume a generic repayment penalty or automatic full forgiveness that the actual agreement has not established.

Approval comes before eligible spending
The official page excludes labour and materials incurred before programme approval. It identifies eligible project costs such as materials, labour, permits, inspections and drawings, and describes separate Housing NWT responsibilities for freight and contractor travel. Funding is limited and selection is needs-based through PASS; not every eligible applicant is selected.
Get the scope reviewed before ordering materials or authorizing work. Ask the housing representative how contractor selection, travel, delivery and inspections will be handled for the project. A quotation should make those responsibilities visible rather than burying them in a single total. If the work changes, clarify its approval before the contractor proceeds.

Make the modification work for everyday use
Review the planned arrangement with the person who will use it. Consider the route to the adapted space, the way doors open and the interaction between fixtures and movement. These are questions for a properly scoped project, not extra funded measures promised by this article. Ask the practitioner and project team how they will confirm the completed result meets the identified need.
Keep the final approved drawings, agreement and closeout records. The long-term home comfort guide helps organize priorities beyond one fixture, while the NWT seniors repair guide explains a different programme. Similar geography does not make the two sets of eligibility or spending rules interchangeable.
