# Quebec RénoRégion grants for major rural home repairs

Checked October 30, 2026. RénoRégion helps low-income rural owner-occupants correct major defects in their principal residence. The provincial program exists, but applications are managed locally by regional county municipalities, known as MRCs, and certain municipalities. Your first step is to ask the local administrator about eligibility and available funding. Québec program overview

How much assistance is available

The grant can cover up to 95% of recognized eligible costs. The usual maximum is $20,000, rising to $25,000 when household income is at or below the applicable income level, or NRA. Above that level, the assistance percentage decreases; the income difference must not exceed $12,000. NRA depends on household size and region. These are limits, not promised payments. Provincial income and grant rules

The administrator calculates recognized costs rather than simply applying the percentage to your chosen contractor's price. For the work itself, the calculation uses the lowest of the lowest bid, the final contractor invoice and the program's price schedule. Public assistance combined for the project cannot exceed recognized costs. SHQ program framework, sections 4.6.1 and 4.6.4

Ask for the approved amount and your remaining contribution in writing before agreeing to a payment schedule. A large headline maximum does not establish how much cash you need to complete your particular repair.

Which homes may qualify

The property must be your principal residence and contain no more than two dwellings. Its standardized building value, excluding land, must meet the local limit, which cannot exceed $150,000. Receipt of RénoRégion or Rénovation Québec assistance within the previous five years is an exclusion. Geographic eligibility includes municipalities below 15,000 residents, Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine and certain unserviced areas of larger municipalities; territorial exclusions also apply. Property and geographic criteria

Have the administrator check your address and assessment rather than relying on a real-estate listing's market value. For a duplex or mixed-use building, ask how the eligible residential portion is assessed.

What repairs can qualify

The work must address major defects and reach at least $3,500. Categories include the roof, structure, exterior walls, openings, electrical and plumbing systems, heating and insulation. Cosmetic modernization, routine maintenance and energy improvements unrelated to a major defect are excluded. SHQ framework, sections 4.4.1 and 4.4.2

Wait for the eligibility certificate before starting. The general rule requires an appropriately licensed RBQ contractor, and authorized work must be finished within twelve months. Payment is normally made after completion and verification, so discuss how you will manage contractor payments before work begins. Authorization and payment rules

Why local intake needs a separate check

Brome-Missisquoi publishes a $110,600 allocation for 2026–2027 and warns that new files cannot be processed once that budget is committed. Its page links to a non-binding preregistration form. This published allocation is not a real-time balance of money still available. MRC Brome-Missisquoi

Meanwhile, Pontiac's page still carries a notice closing its 2025–2026 intake and says 2026–2027 information will follow once it receives instructions. That notice is not evidence of a provincewide cancellation, or proof that Pontiac has reopened. MRC Pontiac intake notice

The provincial framework runs to March 31, 2027, unless ended earlier. This is not a uniform local application deadline. SHQ framework, section 7

When you contact your MRC, ask whether applications are being accepted, whether a waiting list exists, which income-year documents it needs and whether funding has been reserved for your file. Do not begin repairs on the strength of a general program webpage or a submitted registration alone.

Get a local decision before turning a repair into a contract

Contact the administrator for the property's address and describe the defect you need to correct. Ask whether the present intake is accepting files, whether a waiting list is being used and what stage reserves funding for an individual application. Record the name of the program edition discussed and the date of the reply. A general provincial framework and a local allocation announcement answer different questions from a written authorization for your home.

Once an inspector has defined the eligible work, ask contractors to price that same scope. Separate optional improvements so that their costs do not obscure the approved repair. Keep the inspector's description, quotes and authorization together, and clarify how changes discovered during construction must be reported before agreeing to extras.

Check payment timing and completion conditions

Prepare a cash-flow plan for the repair, including deposits, the household contribution and when a grant can be paid. Ask the administrator which completion period applies to the authorization you receive; older local pages can describe an earlier edition. Do not choose an installation date by treating the provincial framework's end date as a guaranteed local deadline.

Keep photographs and invoices requested for inspection and payment, and ask how to report a delay. Our contractor quote guide helps compare identical scopes. If moisture is involved, the basement preparation guide can help frame questions before cosmetic finishing begins. For energy advice rather than major-defect repair funding, the separate Éconologis guide explains its current seasonal intake status; it is not a successor to RénoRégion.
