# Canada Greener Homes Grant closure and homeowner alternatives
The Canada Greener Homes Grant is closed. New applications ended in February 2024, and December 31, 2025 was the final document-upload deadline. Payment requests are no longer accepted. This article explains the former grant so homeowners can recognise outdated offers and look for appropriate alternatives. Official closure notice
What the grant used to cover
The former program offered $125 to $5,000 toward eligible energy retrofits, plus up to $600 for the combined cost of pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluations. The household maximum was therefore $5,600, not $5,600 for renovations alone. The evaluation contribution required completion of the grant process and at least one eligible retrofit. Historical amounts
Supported work included qualifying insulation, air sealing, windows and doors, heat pumps and solar photovoltaic systems. Each measure had technical conditions and its own calculation. A renovation did not qualify simply because a contractor described it as energy efficient. Additions, ordinary air conditioners, roofs and rented equipment were among the exclusions. These historical categories are not a current offer. Former eligible and ineligible work
Who could participate
Ordinary homeowner applicants needed evidence of ownership and that the property was their primary residence. Newly built homes were excluded. Someone purchasing an existing home needed a new evaluation rather than relying on the previous owner's report. Special routes applied to eligible Indigenous organisations registering multiple homes. Former eligibility criteria
For evaluations performed from July 1, 2021, the household generally needed at least one retrofit that was both eligible and recommended by its energy advisor. Earlier evaluations had distinct transitional rules. Those distinctions still matter when reading an old file, but they do not reopen eligibility for work planned today. Historical evaluation rules

What closure means for an old application
The application window and final claim deadline were different stages. Joining the program before intake closed did not create an unlimited period to claim. The federal notice directs residents of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and northern or off-grid communities to their relevant delivery information. Closure and regional links
If you are trying to resolve a past file, gather its application number, evaluation reports, invoices and correspondence before contacting the administrator that handled it. Ask about that specific file rather than submitting a new grant application. Keep the original records while the question remains unresolved.
Where to look for alternatives
The separate Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program provides no-cost upgrades to qualifying low-to-median-income homeowners and tenants through participating regional delivery organisations. Households apply through those local programs, not directly to the federal government. Local intake and eligibility must be checked; a federal listing does not guarantee an available place. Affordability program and regional links
Treat any alternative as a fresh eligibility check. Before accepting a quote, ask which exact program applies, whether approval must precede work, which equipment qualifies and who submits the claim. Do not include an old Greener Homes Grant amount in a new project's budget.
Be cautious if someone offers to register you through an unsolicited call or home visit. The federal closure page says no third parties were authorised to make unsolicited contact to enrol homeowners. Official warning

Separate an old grant file from a new renovation budget
Create two records if an old application and a new project are both on your desk. In the first, keep the original program identifier, assessment dates, invoices, submission confirmation and any decision. In the second, list only support that is currently available for the new scope and the stage of each application. This prevents an old advertisement or unresolved payment question from becoming an assumed contribution to new work.
If a quote still includes a Greener Homes Grant deduction, ask for the price to be shown without it. Compare that price with other complete quotes. Ask the contractor to identify any different program by its full name and official administrator, including the approval needed before installation. Do not treat a change of program name on a sales document as a transfer of an old entitlement.
Choose a next step that fits the household
For income-targeted help, start with the official affordability-program links for your province. In British Columbia, our ECAP guide explains how an assessment-led installation differs from a rebate. Ontario readers can compare Home Renovation Savings with Home Winterproofing. These are separate choices with separate conditions.
The National Heat Pump Rebate announcement belongs in a future-planning column until its application process opens. Keep an urgent repair decision separate from expectations about an announced incentive. Our quote-comparison guide provides a way to compare the actual work and exclusions before committing to a contractor.
