# Ontario Home Efficiency Rebate Plus closure and current alternatives

Checked October 30, 2026. This is a closed-program guide.

Home Efficiency Rebate Plus, usually called HER+, is closed. It delivered the Canada Greener Homes Grant in Ontario through a partnership between Natural Resources Canada and Enbridge Gas. New applicants cannot use HER+ to fund a renovation planned today. The federal Ontario page confirms the closure. Government of Canada status

The three deadlines were different

HER+ had separate cutoffs for entering the program, completing the final assessment and submitting the file:

StageFinal date
New intake and pre-retrofit assessmentFebruary 5, 2024
Post-retrofit assessmentDecember 1, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time
Application paperwork submissionDecember 31, 2025

Enbridge says late grant-payment requests will not be processed and no exceptions can be made. Finishing renovation work alone did not replace the assessment and paperwork requirements. Enbridge closure notice

What the former program covered

HER+ supported eligible insulation, air sealing, windows and doors, heat pumps, renewable energy and certain resilience measures. Its published terms required an eligible pre-retrofit evaluation, at least one qualifying improvement recommended in the advisor’s report, and a post-retrofit evaluation.

The historical terms listed lifetime rebate limits of $10,000 for Enbridge Gas customers and $5,000 for non-Enbridge customers, subject to eligibility and previous Canada Greener Homes participation. Assessment support was limited to $600 across the two programs. These figures explain older advertisements and project files; they are not current offers. Housing type, heating source, equipment and installation conditions also applied. Historical HER+ terms

If you already submitted a claim

Ask your registered energy advisor about missing documents, assessment questions or an unresolved application. Enbridge’s FAQ directs homeowners who have heard nothing more than three months after their final assessment to their service organization. That contact route is not an extension of the closed application window. Existing-file guidance

For older federal files, the Government of Canada directs Ontario homeowners who applied before January 4, 2023, to the Canada Greener Homes portal to check status. Those who applied after that date are directed to Enbridge. If your file sits on the transition date, ask the administrator which channel holds it rather than opening a new application. Current alternatives to investigate

Home Renovation Savings offers assessment-based bundles and separate individual-upgrade routes. It has its own rates and eligibility, so a former HER+ quote is not a reliable calculation for a new project. Current program overview

Its FAQ allows consideration of new upgrades after earlier program participation, but not another rebate for the same previously incentivized improvement. Past participation rules

The Energy Affordability Program offers eligible households no-cost assessments and tailored upgrades rather than a general renovation cheque. What a household receives depends on its eligibility and existing equipment. Save on Energy program

Treat these as separate current options, not an automatic transfer of an old HER+ file. Before signing a new contract, identify the exact program, confirm its present rules and keep a copy of the offer used to calculate your budget.

Reconstruct the timeline for an unresolved file

Start with the dated assessment reports, submission confirmation and the last message from the service organization. Put the events in order: entry into the program, work completed, final assessment, document submission and the decision or payment received. Mark the event you are asking about. This gives the administrator a specific question to investigate without presenting an old project as a new application.

If a contractor supplied the paperwork, ask for your own copies of the invoices and equipment details. Keep an original copy when sending documents for review, and record the contact channel used. A message that a document was received is different from confirmation that a grant was approved. Ask the service organization to explain the recorded status rather than relying on a promised payment date from a salesperson.

Start a new project with a fresh calculation

For a new renovation, ask for a quote that removes HER+ deductions and identifies the actual current offer being proposed. Compare eligible work, assessment costs, payment timing and exclusions. If the contractor is reusing an older estimate, check the equipment and scope as carefully as the rebate amount; a different program may require a different sequence of steps.

Read our Home Renovation Savings guide for the distinction between bundled work and individual measures. Households seeking installed upgrades without arranging a rebate-funded renovation can review Home Winterproofing. The federal Greener Homes Grant archive explains the broader closure. Use the quote-comparison guide to make contractor prices comparable before applying any independently confirmed support.
